Hot off the press

Arsenal and Spurs – buy or bust this week?

Whilst there’s normally no need to panic after just two games of a new season, the North London neighbours must buy this week. The alternative will be another year of unfulfilled ambitions leaving Arsenal with no silverware for the 4th year running and Spurs outside the top four yet again.

Wenger’s principles of trusting youth, minimising debt and sticking to a wage structure are fine. However if these principles don’t produce trophies he will have failed again this year. Who cares if the 7 players on Arsenal’s bench yesterday had an average age of 19 when the team loses to Fulham?

Since January Gooners can't understand why Wenger hasn't bought an imposing, experienced defensive central midfield player. Like all other managers he needs to speculate to accumulate.

Wenger has appeared in the past to be a genius but.... if lunacy is 'doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result' then he is also a lunatic. There's a fine line between the two.

At Spurs, Ramos achieved great success at Sevilla playing stylish, attacking football. The beautiful game that older fans will recall from earlier decades at White Hart Lane.

On the plus side he has bought several talented midfield players, Bentley, Giovani and Modric all excite as well as a solid goalkeeper in Gomes. So far so good.

The glaring weakness in Ramos’ squad is up front. He must know it, every fan knows it, Middlesboro and Sunderland proved it. The sale of Defoe and Keane plus the childish behaviour of the bolshie Bulgarian Berbatov leaves Spurs with Darren Bent and err Darren Bent who scores most of his goals in pre-season friendlies.

Like Wenger, Ramos has one week to address this weakness. If he does not Spurs will have as much chance of making a Champions League place as their namesakes from San Antonio.

North Londoners pay more to watch their teams than any other fans in the world. Given this, and their world class managers, they are entitled to expect world class results.

Can someone explain to me why Manure who are carrying and servicing a debt in the region of double of Arsenals and can still manage to buy £20 plus million pound players. They are not run by idiots, but hard businessmen, they bought the club as an investment and they can still balance their books and make a profit. I am not saying that buying expenses players guarantees success, but I am saying that you won't be successful if you don't compete for the best players. It's a fact of life that the clubs that spent the cash in the last few seasons have won the trophies and it will probably be the same this time.

I agree with Paul99, Wenger's experiment was bold and promising but it has failed and he needs to reassess his strategy...he's only got just over a week too!!!

Spurs have a good crack at it in the transfer windows, it doesn't help with them sacking their managers every two seasons lol!

Good article, I don't want Wenger out at the end of the season but if he's lost it he would need to go.

At least Spurs have been in the market building a solid defense and looking to find a good formation up front. They need to sort out the Berbatov saga. Arsenal on the other hand continue to adopt this singular approach and only buy young inexperienced players. Wenger it aint working, it's time to be realistic about life.

Tottenham should have bought a central defender a ball winning midfielder and as soon as keane went a top class striker
