Hot off the press

Newcastle improving and are ready for off form Arsenal as Michael Owen keeps scoring. Is Owen going to bring back the glory days to the Toon?

Michael Owen is well on the road to recovery after a summer of sickness and is ready to terrorise the Arsenal defence this weekend. The Newcastle and England hotshot has been riddled with injury since his move to St James's Park, but is beginning to find his feet again and is fast becoming a Toon legend. For the second time in four days he has come off the bench to win the game for Newcastle proving just what a valuable player he is to them. Considering how many players The Toon Army have out injured, the results keep coming and Kevin Keegan seems to have put together a hungry, tenacious squad that may well prove to be their best in many seasons.

Michael Owen's extra-time winner made sure the Premier League side are in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Kevin Keegan's players should never have been in trouble after two first-half goals put them in the driving seat. But Clinton Morrison struck out of nowhere on the stroke of half-time and Scott Dann headed an equaliser in the fourth minute of injury time to send the tie into extra-time.

That was Owen's cue to show just how much Newcastle need a natural-born finisher when the chips are down. Just as he did against Bolton at the weekend, the substitute struck a decisive winner.

Keegan has FIVE forwards out of action at the moment but Owen believes he is on the brink of playing a bigger part in the Premier League.

He said: "We're a lot of strikers down. I'm the last fit striker and there are some important games coming up. But I'm building all the time and hopefully I will start against Arsenal on Saturday now."

Sky Blues boss Coleman said: "We were much more in their faces in the second half - and then they bring on Michael Owen. He showed his worth when he came on." (THE SUN)

Just how much improved are Newcastle this season under Keegan? What would constitute a successful season for the Toon Army? Is Michael Owen still England's top striker?
