Hot off the press

Arsenal - We play the most attractive football, we play the most attractive football, we play the most attractive football.

Reading the opinions of Arsenal fans on various football websites is starting to get funny.

Whatever Wayne Rooney says about the league being between Chelsea, United and Arsenal, we know Wayne probably isn't the guy to go to for incisive analysis. It seems that a lot of the Gooners aren't over their six months of embarrassingly pre-emptive gloating last season.

First off, it took Arsenal a late equaliser to get a point away at Sunderland, where Liverpool's late goal won the game. Also, Arsenal lost at home to Hull; whatever you think about Hull's impressive and wholly unpredicted (outside of Hull-based psychiatric wards) start to the season, I don't think anyone seriously expects them to be in a European competition next season. Compare this with Chelsea's consistent crushing of their opposition and United's newfound form, and it seems that Arsenal aren't near the level of these two teams.

When it comes to explaining away trophyless years and mediocre results, a lot of Arsenal arguments seem to boil down to "we lost Eduardo at a crucial time last season, our kids hammered a championship side again recently, our squad cost less than many Premier League teams and we play the best football so I'm not listening anymore, la la la la la laaaaaaa". Add to this a few cheap shots at Liverpool (not as easy this season) and regular reminders of the cost of the United and Chelsea teams (and benches).

I know it's not a popular sentiment, nor is it an original thought, but I'd rather my team was winning stuff than playing this "beautiful football". The Arsenal football seems to be analogous to charming a pretty girl you meet, organising a guaranteed-action date and then sending her a text message that afternoon saying "I can't make it out, I'm really ill... and tired... and my boss just told me I have to do some come in to work early tomorrow... and it's cold outside and I lost my coat". Dirk Kuyt might work like a North Korean political prisoner but his style has payed off for Liverpool in many big games. And I think you don't need to be a Liverpool fan to acknowledge we've had a fair share of great games during the Benitez years.

The fact is that Arsenal are several world-class players away from a sustainable challenge for the league title. And they don't have anything like the squad depth the other big four members have. This "beautiful football" thing is starting to sound like an excuse for the prolonged failure of the club to win anything.

Sure, Arsenal are still ahead of the pretenders to the big four CL club - who are in for at least another year of UEFA cup football, but it seems that Arsenal fans are faced with an unpleasant choice. Either big up their team and Cesc 'I'd like to play in Spain again' Fabregas and Em 'I'm worth £30, me, sort of' Adebayor at every possibility or acknowledge that Liverpool, this season, appear to be a superior team. The whole idea of Liverpool being better than Arsenal has generally attracted scorn during the past decade, even though we'd probably have finished ahead of them for the third successive season if it wasn't for our hugely publicised boardroom problems massively undermining both the team's morale and Rafa last time around. But I just used an 'if' and am starting to sound like an Arsenal fan.

Mourinho's dismissive comments of Arsenal's squad at the start of the season seem to be in the process of being vindicated. Liverpool are gonna get the third place (at least), guys. Arsenal might break their trophy drought with one of the domestic cups, though.

Yes Arsenal may play the most attractive soccer abut at the end of the season its trophies taht counts . That means winning matches and not drawing and getting beaten by sides like hull and fulham.I believe all side in the epl are capable of beating one another .
To use another analogy. you may be the most attractive woman but ate end of the day if you don't get married it's
sad. Same with Arsenal. Swashbuckling soccer plus intricate passing which even confuses the gunners own players is getting you nowhere.

When fans go and watch a match they would prefer their team to win and not play fanciful football and getting beaten. It's only happening at arsenal .
i wonder how long this experiment of playing attractive soccer without trophies to match can continue. The players will get frustrated and will leave.

I've watched great football sides for decades and never have I seen football played as it is by this Arsenal side. Don't the TV know it too, they're never off it. An Arsenal game is a game worth watching, whatever the score. I remember a good Liverpool side once. It had Kevin Keegan and Steve Highway in it. Say no more. Arsenal are a great side, win or lose and frankly, Liverpool are now so bad to watch that, who cares what they win! Honestly they are shocking. They play a turgid, smothering, siege system based on set piece and long shots. Give them all the trophies they want. I'll take top 4 and the Arsenal every time.

Oh please! Why do you think Liverpool are so much better than Arsenal this season? If last season taught us anything, its that being unbeaten and playing well after 7 games is no guarantee that you are going to win the league. Liverpool have just lost Skrtel for possibly the rest of the season. They are winning a lot of games in the last 10 minutes of the match, as Arsenal were doing last season, as that extra effort takes its toll on the players over the course of the season. Arsenal may not be playing well right now, but don't forget Rosicky, Diaby and Eduardo have not yet made an appearance, Silvestre and Bischoff have only played for the reserves until now.

Liverpool drew with Stoke and United and Chelsea drew with Newcastle and Spurs. I would say Hull are a better side than all of those 3. Let's see what happens come May, but I Arsenal have just as much chance of winning the league as anyone else. There are still 93 points to play for, so its a bit early to be writing anyone off (well except Tottenham!)

so you could just wait untill the last 15 minutes of the last game of the year so you could see them lift the trophy? i would rather watch 38 orgasmic games, and no trophy!

We did finish only 4 points off the winning team last season playing our beautiful game and all the "if's" you mention. Two games away to ManU & Chelsea cost us the title; and we didn’t have to depend on Kuyt’s neighborly referee and Babels dive to progress in the CL. Seems like your still affected by our away jersey this season! tsk tsk…

do you hate arsenal?
fair enough arsenal aren't playing well at the moment. and i also do agree that they need to buy at least two more experienced players. however your comment about you'd rather watch a boring team that wins trophies makes me sick. football is an entertainment sport and comments like that shows how bad it has deteriorated with fans like yourself only in for the big money teams and trophies.
