Hot off the press

Newcastle to lose out on Michael Owen but to Chelsea, Liverpool or elsewhere?

Michael Owen may not have had quite the illustrious career at Newcastle as he had hoped for. In fact given that he had one of the brightest starts to his career from any youngster in England, being an unbelievable goal scoring sensation at Liverpool, moving to Madrid, actually impressing there despite the difference in culture etc, and then moving to Newcastle where he hoped to be a saviour, he has since died down, including in his miraculous goal scoring form for England that makes him our top scorer of all time.

Given the high profile start to his career you would be justified in thinking that Owen is coming to the end of his career, but in fact he is actually only 27, and that is considered b y many to be goal scoring peak age, at least between 27 and 30. Think of Drogba, Anelka, Berbatov, Keane, Van Nistelrooy, Henry, Eto'o, all were in their most impressive during these years and if Owen can stay fit there is no denying his miraculously brilliant potential as a goal scorer. So how on earth can he be leaving for so little?

Newcastle will fear the worst as he is considering a move back to his old club, though the impressive form of an old strike partner, Heskey, might well stop that move. Owen scored an unbelievable 118 league goals in 216 games for Liverpool, though you could also see him moving to Spurs or City, and he might not appreciate being given a chance to kick start his career as a 3rd striker, despite his love for the Merseyside Club.

With only a few months left on his contract, and Newcastle admittedly a club that will never sneak into the top 4 any time soon, let alone UEFA cup territory should expect that perhaps losing Owen is a very impending reality and prepare for a replacement. He could go for as little as £2million, and in this case any team would be getting a remarkable deal.

But where do fans think he should go? To see him back in an England shirt would he be best suited at Pompy, Spurs, Man City? Or are Chelsea and Liverpool a good idea seeing as though they will be contending for trophies; the same trophies that have eluded him in the past few years?

As a player where would you rather play, top 4 club or below, champions league or not and a chance to be a league winner or not. For me there is no other choice if Rafa comes calling. If he scores goals then he might not be 3rd choice he may be number 1 or 2 (though unlikely), at the end of the day it's down to the player to play well and prove he is worth a starting place.

No doubt the best chance will be at Liverpool. His boyhood club, Liverpool in Champions League and with them at the top of the table, what more for better time than Michael Owen to return to Liverpool. Spurs and Portsmouth are okay but does he think that UEFA cup is enough to impress especially with inferior players around him. He may not be the first choice but recent injuries for Torres means Owen might just have abit more playing time than he thinks. If he wants to return to England, there is only one way and that is to return to Liverpool and take his chance this time around to work with Rafa Benitez.
