Title Race Tightening; Liverpool Draw with West Ham – does it mean anything?

Last night as Liverpool failed to score, with the only notable threat of the game coming from a Benayoun half volley that was well saved, it began to hit home to Liverpool fans that this might well be another season where they almost make it. Granted they are top of the League, and although only by a point it really doesn't mean much… at this stage of the season anything can happen, with Christmas coming up the run of games is so intense for players that it really is the team with the most solid squad who sees out this period successfully, in this sense only Chelsea or United stand any chance of claiming maximum points over the Christmas period. Liverpool still have to play Arsenal at home, who although poor in general this season have managed to win points when its mattered, and Liverpool will be a big challenge that they should enjoy.

The problem really isn't in beating the teams like West Ham at home, because by and large Liverpool will do that, it's the head on collisions that are important, and so far Liverpool are making the most of these with impressive performances against both Chelsea and United. The real test will somewhat ironically, be Arsenal.

However fans don't see it the same way, they are generally irritated that their team didn't take advantage and go three points clear… other fans might remember that Arsenal went 7 points clear in the end of December last season and still managed to lose the league by a considerable 5 points, so realistically fans will have to know that there are other factors involved and that patience is a virtue. Benitez rightly pointed out

What do fans think about Liverpool's position, are they impressed or irritated to be so close to being overtaken?

It means that West Ham have turned the corner and can defend as well as any team in the PL. It also means that if Liverpool get the jitters about going top at this stage of the season, what will they be like during the run in? Man Utd all the way as I see it.
