With Friends like these Who Needs Enemies – Dunphy Sticks Knife into Sunderland’s Roy Keane

Eyebrows everywhere have been raised after rent-a-quote Irish pundit Eamonn Dunphy called Roy Keane ‘clueless’, saying he had wasted a ‘staggering’ amount on players since his taking the Sunderland job.

Dunphy is no stranger to controversy, indeed it seems he thrives on it, but this criticism is all the stranger when you consider how close he was to Keane, even writing his biography. He also defended Keane when he shameful left the Irish World Cup squad in 2002.

Regardless of who said it – is Dunphy right? Keane himself called his own transfer policy into question and Sunderland’s performances certainly suggest that he will need to shake things up in January. It can only be assumed with such massive outlays already, Keane will need to sell before he buys anymore.

But should he be allowed to? Should Sunderland cut their losses and get in a manager with experience, and learn the lesson not just to appointment someone because of their playing reputation?
