Hot off the press

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo - Did he deserve the award?

And the FIFA World Player of the Year goes to…

No surprises really – Cristiano Ronaldo picked up the award, beating Lionel Messi into second with Liverpool striker Fernando Torres in third.

Ronaldo has had quite a year – winning the Premier League, Champions League and the Club World Cup (and of course, crashing his Ferrari).

Did he deserve the award?

Fernando Torres had a phenomenal debut season for Liverpool and Messi has continued to improve and impress at Barcelona, but really Ronaldo’s goal haul and performances for Manchester United make him a deserved winner.

Who would have got your vote for the award?

If, when on his feet, technical ability, skill, pace and finishing quality were all that counted he probably does deserve it. But when it comes to honours in any field of life there should be more to them than just that. There should, for example, be the matter of honour, honesty and setting an example to others in personal conduct. On those qualities, the unpleasant and beligerent Ronaldo wouldn't deserve to come even close.
