Hot off the press

Should Manchester United pay £28m to keep Carlos Tevez?

I was fortunate enough to be at Craven Cottage on Saturday night to witness a Manchester United performance of the very highest quality. Fergie’s side were so good, so much better than Fulham, so outstanding in every respect, that it really was quite embarrassing.

The front two, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez were brilliant. As a pair I haven’t seen a duo destroy a team like they did for a long, long time. They made a defence that’s been impressive all season look like a pub side, such was their incredible movement, skill and desire to score. Even the home fans were purring.

United’s performance in west London provoked two questions for me; a) can they win the Quintuple? b) will they decide to pay £28m to keep Tevez at the club?

The answer to my first poser has to be a categorical yes. On Saturday’s evidence it’s difficult to see how anyone can stop them. Inter Milan probably pose the biggest threat this Wednesday but if they get past that particular obstacle I can genuinely see them going all the way on all fronts. They don’t have a single weakness. Only human nature and the unpredictability of football can stop them.

Carlos Tevez’s future is less cut and dried. Despite his hero status among United fans the club’s board seem reluctant to spend a fortune on retaining the Argentinean’s services. Sir Alex Ferguson too, although a huge admirer sees the former Boca Juniors star as his third best striker.

The lure of Real Madrid will no doubt whet the front man’s lips but in truth a move to the Santiago Bernabeu would be a backward step football-wise. The Spaniards are years behind Ferguson’s side in terms of development.

It seems to me as if Tevez is pining for a future at Manchester United. In spite of being rested more often than he’d like he wants to stay and be part of something special.

After his virtuoso performance at the weekend it’s hard to imagine United allowing him to quit the club. Judging from the ‘Sign him up’ chants emanating from the away end at Craven Cottage the fans have made their minds up he has to stay – but will the club oblige their wishes?

£28m is a lot of money to spend but is there another striker on the planet that you’d rather have alongside Rooney or Berbatov? I can’t think of one, can you?

Of course they should sign him.

They should be made to pay the money whether they want him or not. They have had the use of his services already and to now not pay up would be nothing short of criminal - but then what is new at Old Trafford.

Of course they should sign him. How many more man-of-the-match performances does he need to put in to justify his transfer fee? Most managers can only dream about a striker with Dirk Kuyt's workrate, coupled with huge end product. Get out your chequebook lads...
