Why I’ll miss Sir Bobby Robson

There have been ample and heartfelt sympathies paid to Sir Bobby Robson since his death this week and I would like to own fond, modest memory of the former England manager.

It was back in 1998 during the World Cup in France. I was in my early 20s and working on a two-week contract for a newspaper and desperate to impress the boss. Sir Bobby was out in France doing some punditry and after a bit of digging, I managed to find out which hotel he was staying at.

I cold called him in the hope of getting the interview which might get me some kudos with the editor.

Sir Bobby answered and I asked for 15 minutes of his time to discuss England’s chances. He listened politely, said he’d be happy to give the interview but would have to check it was OK because he was contracted to do a column for the duration of the tournament. He took my number and promised he’d call me back in an hour.

A decade of experience later has taught me people of his stature rarely, if ever, call you back if there isn’t something in it for them or they’re plugging something. I’d never met him, I had no reputation whatsoever to back me up and I had, after all, phoned him in his hotel uninvited and unannounced.

An hour later he called me back. He apologised profusely, explaining he’d be in breach of his contract if he gave me the interview. Without me asking, he gave me his mobile number and told me to call anytime once the tournament was over. We chatted for 10 minutes before I thanked him for taking the trouble to let me know.

I never had cause to call him again and I never had the privilege of meeting him. But 10 years on, having tried and frequently failed to interview many of football’s ‘great and good’, I’m only too aware that when people who really knew him say he was a true gentleman, they’re really not lying.
