David Bentley’s Summer Goes from Bad to Worse

In purely football terms, David Bentley has had a hugely disappointing 12 months. Moving from Blackburn to Spurs last summer, Bentley was expecting to be starring in a team challenging to break into the top 4. Instead, he found himself on the fringes of a team firstly struggling to avoid relegation and then as a player not needed in a mid table team.

Harry Redknapp, current manager of Spurs, was thought to be keen to sell Bentley to raise funds before news of Bentley’s charge of drunk driving was made public knowledge. The player is now seen as ‘damaged goods’ and the club are keen to see the player leave even if it means taking a hit on the money they paid for him last year.

O’Neill is aware of the Spurs’ desire to see the player out of the club and is thought to be pondering a cut price £5 million move, which would represent a £10 million loss in just one year – such has been the stark decline of Bentley’s career.
