Hot off the press

Should Avram Grant be sacked as Chelsea manager?

You know what, I’m not sure that Chelsea will or should after what has been an amazing season at the Bridge.

1) Until the draw with Wigan – and by the way that was a goal in a million from Heskey – I mean it’d take another million efforts for him to score that again..Until the draw with Wigan, Chelsea were in the title race and that after being written off time and again.
2) Avram Grant has for the most part been working with Jose Mourinho’s squad of players, who’s loyalty from afar, from some of them could be open to question.
3) The owner Roman Abramovic made the choice to install Grant as manager, so was it his fault and not the manager’s.
4) Chelsea are still in the Champions League and within 180 minutes of making the Final in Moscow.

All this not bad for a team who until Mr Abramovic took over were not prolific winners of trophies, let alone even in contention.

Chelsea fans have been queuing up to criticise Avram Grant ever since he was given the manager’s job earlier in the season. With the Premier League now seemingly gone, does he have to win the Champions League to stay in a job, and should he stay in a job.

All the successful football clubs rely on stability, just look at Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. United stood by Fergie for years before reaping the rewards, and Arsene Wenger is about to go a third season without a trophy and yet no sane Arsenal fan would want him to go.

SO Ok Avram Grant is Football’s equivalent of John Major with a personality of wet fish, but is that a reason for getting rid of him? I mean not every manager in the Premier League give’s virtuoso displays at their pre and post match press conferences. If fact I can only think of Harry Redknapp and Martin O’Neill among the managers in the top 10 or 12 in the Premier League who have outstanding personalities, add Kevin Keegan to those two and that’s about it for the top flight, but does that make them bad managers. Neil Warnock’s a great laugh to speak and listen to but does that make him a top manager?

Well I guess I’ve talked myself into Chelsea sticking with Avram Grant for the time being. You never know he might with the Champions League, you never know he might prize the title away from Manchester United next season, and finally being a West Ham fan – arch rivals of Chelsea – it’s not altogether boring seeing Chelsea flatter only to deceive, snatch defeat from the jaws of victory – carry on Avram you’re doing a cracking job.

I think he'll go whatever happens. Once the media have their claws in it is almost impossible to fight against it.

I think aajblue got it spot on there...opinion does seem to change from one week to the next. As an outsider looking in I think change this summer will happen regardless of whether he can win the Champions League or not. Clubs need stability and with Grant at the helm this will never happen as there will always be people waiting to pounce on him after every bad result. Press murmurings, whether rightly or wrongly, do seem to cause upset as top players often become targets for unwarranted abuse. This never happened under Mourinho until it became clear he was going but I feel it will always be the case with Grant in charge

Due to the nature of our results, performances and form of the players, I can't decide whether I want Grant to stay or not from one week to the next.

What I do take offence to MOOSE, is that all you suggest is that blues fans that want Grant out, only feel that way because of his personality......

I bet the vast majority of Chelsea fans don't look at the situation in that way at all. It's all to do with tactics, substitutions, results, drops in form individually and collectively and much more.

It's pretty daft to suggest it purely personal

Manager like owner ... no charisma. Time to inject a bit of X- Factor

Chelsea are recognised as one of the major clubs in the world. Part of their new image is worldwide fan appeal. They need a manager to fit the image and Grant certainly doesn't. It does not mean that he does not have most the qualities for an good manager but Chelsea need more. They need the SEX APPEAL factor. Grant needs to take up a behind the scene position and a new spin doctor brought in.
