Hot off the press

If I was a Man U or Chelsea fan – heaven forbid – I’d start being nice to anyone I knew who was a West Ham or Newcastle fan.

As a Hammer, I would expect Chelsea fans to put aside their age old rivalry with us and learn the words to I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles on Saturday, go out and sing their hearts out, in support of West Ham at Old Trafford.

WE could win Chelsea the title next week, just as WE won Blackburn the title more than a decade ago with a draw at home to Man U.

And Man Utd fans, I’m sure you would love, love it if Newcastle beat them (Chelsea) to win you the title next Monday.

So it’s time for hostilities to end or am I being a complete numpty?

Would an Everton fan cheer Liverpool on to help the Toffeemen achieve something, would Arsenal and Spurs ever cheer each other on, and would a Celtic fan cheer Rangers on this week to reach the UEFA Cup Final, so as to make it even harder for the Gers to take the Scottish Premier League title?

When would you cheer on you deadliest rivals, is there ever an occasion you have?

I would not want West Ham to lose this weekend, just so that Chelsea wouldn’t win the title. I am not a Chelsea fan and being a Hammer they are among our biggest rivals. But I would rather West Ham completed the double AGAIN over Man Utd and that help Chelsea, than vice versa.

At this time of year fans loyalty is tested not only by their own team’s achievements or lack of them, but also by this conundrum of whether to cheer on teams you’d normally abuse in the office or on the terraces.

For example will Swansea fans for Welsh pride want Cardiff to win the Cup Final, or because they’ve won a trophy and the Bluebirds are possibly enemy number one in the valleys, will they be desperate for Portsmouth to stuff them at Wembley?

And I know a fair few Villa fans who want Birmingham to beat Fulham and go on to secure their Premier League status – just so they can have an easy 6 points every year (just a joke).

Take last Friday as an example. I went to Yeovil, and by the way, what a fantastically friendly club they were. I had fans of clubs like Brighton willing Yeovil on and even some fans of clubs a little closer to Huish Park, who wanted the home side to win and given Brighton a chance of piping Leeds to a play-off spot.
Maybe I’m wrong but I think over the next month all our loyalties will be tested especially with the prospect of an all English Champions League Final.

Who you kidding. Hammers couldn't win at Old Trafford. Maybe Fergie might try and help by playing his reserves.

When Man Utd and Arsenal were fighting for the league title on the last day a good few years back I seem to remember a few Arsenal fans with banners saying "I support Tottenham for one day only". I'd be quite happy to see Liverpool help us achieve something as although they would try and wind you up saying we only did well 'cos of them, it would really wind them up knowing they've put a smile on our face. I'm sure a few Liverpool fans are secretly gutted that throughout the '90s they beat teams who were involved in relegation fights with us thus ensuring our top flight status remained intact

Come on you Hammers go do the business against Man U.
Time to be physical and play them off the park. They are full of nerves and losing it. Do something for London and give the Moose a thrill.
